Catalogue Number

Statistics Canada uses a ten digit numbering system to catalogue all reports, surveys, and guides published within their organization. If you know the numbering system well these catalogue numbers can act as an "at a glance" guide to the information within any Statistics Canada document.

Please be aware that the CSDS Catalogue also uses a field entitled "Catalogue Number". While this does match Statistics Canada catalogue numbers for most data there are some sources for which this could not be used. In those cases the CSDS "Catalogue Number" is the file name of the table.

Census Profile

Provides a statistical overview of the geographic areas in question based on a number of detailed variables and/or groups of variables (approximately 2,100 data lines).

The CSDS Catalogue provides access to the Census Profile for 11 geography sets, ranging from custom geographies to Census Metropolitan Areas and Provinces.

Topic Based Tabulation

Topic Based Tabulations are a series of cross-tabulations that present a portrait of Canada based on the various census topics. They range in complexity and will are available for various levels of geography. A number of the tabulations were be available on day of release for each topic, while others followed several months later. Content varies from:

• A simple overview of the country
• Simple to more complex cross-tabulations
• Current and previous census data

Topic Bundles

The 15 topic bundles comprise a series of tables that were released on day of release as 2006 Census of Population variables became available. Each topic bundle contains cross-tabulations for selected levels of geography.

The release date for each topic bundle is listed below:

1. Age and sex (July 17, 2007)
2. Marital status, Families and households, Housing and shelter costs (housing only) (September 12, 2007)
3. Language (language only), Mobility and migration, Immigration and citizenship (December 4, 2007)
4. Aboriginal peoples (January 15, 2008)
5. Labour, Education, Language (language of work only), Place of work and commuting to work (March 4, 2008)
6. Ethnic origin and visible minorities (April 2, 2008)
7. Income, Housing and shelter costs (shelter costs only) (May 1, 2008)

The CSDS Catalogue provides access to all of these data at geographies as small as Census Sub-Divisions (depending on the table)

Semi-Custom Cross Tabulation

Semi-custom profiles replicate a fixed profile for custom geographies. This format allows for easy comparison of characteristics between geographies. The semi-custom profile content pertains to individuals, families, households, and dwellings. Additional costs apply for creation of custom geographies. See Custom Geography Services (based on a 20% sample). Available for 1971 and 1981 to 2006 Censuses. (Statistics Canada)

The CSDS provides the Basic Census Profile cross tabulated against custom geographies for 10 of our members.

Target Group Profile

Target group profiles replicate a fixed profile for a custom target group (such as a specific ethnic group or linguistic group). This format allows for easier analysis of the characteristics of a target group on its own. In addition to the target group, the geography desired can also be customized. The content pertains to the universe of individuals only (no family, household, or dwelling data are available). Additional costs apply for creation of the target group and for creation of any custom geographies. Note: target group profiles can only be created for the 1991 to 2006 censuses.(Statistics Canada)

The CSDS provides 7 Target Group Profiles for all members down to Dissemination Area geographies, as well as the same 7 Target Group Profiles cross tabulated against custom geographies for 10 of our members.

In total there are over 100 data tables containing Target Group Profile data in the CSDS Catalogue.
